Itch Returns After Formula Change
by CVWDVM - November 13, 2009
Hi Steve,
Thanks for this Forum! It is interesting to read about other cases and very helpful to be able to ask questions.
I recently changed formulas for Golden Retriever with atopy, thinking we were moving him along the continuum you discussed in Denver (in Feb.). However, he then became more itchy. I'd appreciate some input.
Summary of hx: Quigley, 22 month old, male neutered Golden Retriever, 66#. As puppy showed marked pruritus, episodes of dermatitis, exuberant behavior, and tendency to drink entire bowls of water at one time if not interrupted. He tested positive for atopy with high levels in all seasons as well as food allergy.
In 9/08, I started him on a limited ingredient diet, supplimented with home cooking (owners declined raw diet). I also started Xiao Feng San (to dissipate wind) and Modified Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (to clear heat and drain damp), 1 tsp each, BID.
He has done very well. He no longer has episodes of dermatitis. His itch level increased some in the summer but was managable with increase in amount of herbs.
I saw him in 10/09. His personality was now timid, his pulse was superficial and not as strong as expected for his size. His tongue was slightly lavender with pink edges. I concluded that underlying blood deficiency had been revealed. I stopped the XFS and MLDXGT, and started Yi Guan Jian, 1 tsp BID. Not long after, his itch level increased quite a bit. I continued the YGJ and restarted XFS. He is more comfortable again.
Was he not blood deficient? What about approach for long term control?
Thank you!

Hi there,

I've noticed for myself that if I move too far too quickly in switching skin formulas, the same thing happens to me. So when I do move in a new direction with formulas, I do exactly as you just did - continue the old and add in the new, and make sure that I see progress.

I agree that the dog is moving in the general direction of Blood deficiency. The pulse, though, is superficial, implying that the required hemodynamic effect to reduce his itchiness is still to move his blood away from his skin. Tonics like YGJ don't do that, but move the blood toward the skin. A bland, bitter, or salty formula is still called for, despite the fact that the intense heat in the case is, indeed, being slowly bled off, to be eventually replaced by ordinary Blood deficiency. The dog is just getting there more slowly than you are!

Congratulations on your success thus far. I'm sure you'll succeed in the long haul, which is usually what dogs need. A dog like you described needs usually 6 to 9 months of correct herbal formula use to be itch-free.
