Anal Gland Adenocarcinoma

Hello.

The dog that I post on 2009-08-30 ,with anal gland tumour is not doing well with the treatment.....

It is now on on Ge xia Zhu Yu Tang (3/8 tsp bid), Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (3/8 tsp bid), Hoxey-Like Formula 0.15 ml bid , SiMiaoSan 3/8 tsp bid) and Vitamin A, C, E and Zn supplement with essential fatty acids. I also put it on Barf's meat base diet.I started it on the herbs on the dose as you have suggested initially but the dog was not responding and tumour kept growing bigger with time, then I increased the doses as was stated above from late October.

Unfortunately, the dog was coming in to see me today as the anal gland tumour was burst with an open wound! The size of the tumour was doubled. The sub-lumbar lymph nodes were enlarged so much that I could easily palpate them and I could feel the pulse as when I laid my hands on its abdomen.

The tongue of the dog was still purple with a slightly red tip.Overall, the pulse was not as slippery and the femoral pulse was obviously weaker and deeper on the left hand side.

I have suggested the owner to bring the dog in for acupuncture but they declined. What else can I do now?

Hi Doris,

I'm sorry to hear your patient is not doing well. Things sound quite far gone. If you search the forum, you'll see that one of the other cases was also treated with Neoplasene, which had a strong anti-neoplastic effect when injected into the tumor. Between that and the formulas, I believe the dog is still alive and doing well a year post-diagnosis.

So looking at Bloodroot based 'chemosurgery' alternatives is a possibility in theory, but not in practice if the owner is no longer interested in following up. With very large lymph nodes, it may even be too late for Neoplasene. But even if it wasn't, there'd be a period where the dog would require follow-up and pain management with NSAIDs or even Tramadol as the tumor was destroyed. If you believe the owner is committed as long as you do something different, that's the only thing I've heard of that can possibly work here. Or topical Bloodroot salves.

If you were to pursue that, you'd want to talk to the manufacturer to get specific advice. The VBMA list also had an extensive discussion on this a while back, so there is some expertise there you can access. As for Neoplasene or the topical preparations themselves, they're easy to source. I believe they are obtained from Buck Mountain herbs, but I'd google them to be sure.

Good luck with your case, Doris. I know it's tough to lose one, if that's what ends up happening. All you can do is be comfortable with the fact that you've done your best, and hope that you have better luck on the next one.
