Question Details
Increased Thirst On Four Marvels?
by Michelle1 - November 17, 2009
Hi Steve-
Seeing a 12 y.o M/N Schnauzer for an episode of cluster seizures from the E-clinic. Started him there on Phonebarb and KBr. has hx of elevated SAP, borderline low thyroid function (but had been on Pheno for a week by then) O reports excessive thirst when I started him on four Marvles tablets 1 BID. Pulses were deep and wiry, overweight dog, feel heat from his head- even more warm the night of the seizures per owner. Has her change his diet to a canned grain-free food from the dry l/d he had been on. Not sure why the intense thirst- seemed to stop after the d/c the Four Marvels. Asked her to try at 1/2 tab BID instead (26# dog). What else might work if this lower dose still triggers PU/PD?
Thank-you!
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

There are three possibilities for the thirst.
1. It's the phenobarb, not the SMS. The way to sort this out is to stop SMS for a day or two. If the thirst continues, SMS is not the cause
2. The bitter taste may be causing the dog to drink to relieve it
3. The dog has Yin deficiency, and SMS is aggravating the dryness

Acupuncture points help tremendously in quickly differentiating the Yin deficient dog from the Damp Heat dog. What do they indicate?

The first thing I'd try is stopping the SMS for a day or two. If the thirst continues, it has nothing to do with the SMS.

Steve
