Question Details
CKD In JRT
by drangiekrause - November 17, 2009
Hello,

I have a 14 year old JRT with Stage 3 CKD. The only symptoms are pu/pd. I started him on Rem 8 three weeks ago and he recently had significant behavior changes. He has bitten both of his owners and severely injured one. The bites seemed unprovoked and he seems to have more anxiety and maybe some cognitive dysfunction.

Should I cont on Rem 8 or add something to help the shen?

Thanks

Hi Angie,

Does CKD mean chronic kidney disease?

Generally if we're going to have problems with Rehmannia Eight, it'll be in the production of 'Dampness' signs. In rare instances, these can include behavioural changes that should disappear as soon as the herbs are stopped (within a day or two). If they persist, then there's another cause (e.g. pain?).

How is renal function? If better, then we'll need to use a different Kidney tonic. If the azotemia is the same or worse, then you're probably looking at either San Ren Tang (Three Seeds Decoction) or Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum) as your next treatment options. San Ren Tang would make more sense as it is anti-Dampening.

Hope that is helpful advice,

Steve
