Question Details
Cat With Cystitis
by
I am looking for herbal treatment for a 18 year old, female(N) cat with recurrent cystitis. Treatment with Amoxil clears up the cystitis but not preventative. Hyperactive, vocal, possible dehydrated.

Hi there,

Recurrent bladder inflammation has several different potential causes in Chinese medicine. Recurrent acute cystitis is more what would be considered 'Damp Heat'. You'd want to evaluate the fit of Si Miao San (Four Marvels Powder) or San Ren Tang (Three Seeds Decoction) for that condition. If it is a recurrent E. coli condition, cranberry concentrate (note it must be a concentrate) generally works well and is available in most health food stores. I'd just give the lowest denomination it comes in - e.g. one capsule - once to twice daily. Maybe twice daily to start with, then once daily if it is proving itself useful. For high urine pH and associated infection, Hydrangea and Eupatorium is highly effective. It is a potent acidifier and relieves the cystitis symptoms as well. It is not great tasting, but you'd only be looking at giving about 5 drops per 5 lbs BID. You could use wet food for that or put it in a gel cap.

For chronic cystitis, Blood stasis is the Chinese diagnosis. K'an Herb Company has an excellent formula in their Veterinary Essentials line called Pang Guang Zhu Yu Tang that works well. For chilly cats with hind end weakness, consider a formula called Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang.

Lastly, if the cat is having trouble holding its weight despite normal stool and a good appetite, then a formula called Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is a strong consideration.

Hopefully these suggestions will be useful to you!
