Hiccups
by JULIE SCHELL - December 17, 2009
Hello!
Are hiccups indication of Rebellious Stomach Qi (even if there are no other abnormal clinical signs)? Or maybe Triple Heater Obstruction?
If they are due to Rebellious Stomach Qi, have you ever used Liu Jun Zi Tang to treat hiccups? Thank you!

Hi Julie,

That's a good question. In general, yes, they can indicate stasis, essentially in the form of a spasm of the diaphragmatic muscle. This may be why young dogs are prone to them - their Blood deficient tendencies make them prone to spasm. So I'd think more of antispasmodic formulas like Bu Gan Tang, rather than Stomach formulas. Stomach herbs have peristalsis regulating effects, but hiccups are not really a peristaltic issue, so I wouldn't expect them to respond that well.

Have a great Christmas,

Steve
