Question Details
Essiac Interactions?
by Pamela Page - December 29, 2009
Hello,

A neighboring clinic contacted me because one of their clients wants to give their dog essiac (florEssence). The dog is also on phenobarbital, and the clinic was wondering if there would be any potentially harmful interactions between essiac and phenobarbital. I haven't been able to find anything in my sources, but thought I would check in with you folks.

Thanks much, and all the best in the New Year!

Hi Pam,

It's probably fine to try. It may even help, as I'm sure it has some liver antioxidant activity that can help protect it against the effects of phenobarbital on cyt p 450 induction. As for altering the activity of that enzyme themselves, and thus affecting phenobarbital clearance, this is unlikely, so dosing will not be disrupted.

Have a happy new year!

Steve
