Prostatic Adenocarcinoma

Hi steve,

Have started acupuncture and Pang Guang Zhu Yu Tang for a 7 year old poodle/terrier mix with prostatic adenocarcinoma. he was started on Piroxicam before coming here, and since starting the herbs his stools are better formed- not as flat, but still seeing blood in his urine from time to time and still dysuria (takes him longer to evacuate). He also has fear agression and really hates the needles. Is there anything else that can be done for him with oral treatments? I didn't know if yunnan Paiyao wuold be a good compliment or something else more specific to the region.

Hi Michelle,

Several formulas have been helpful, depending on where the pet is at:

For clear signs of Damp Heat, combine with Si Miao San.

If there are signs of coldness, Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang can be helpful.

For added Blood moving and cooling effects, either increase the dose or combine with Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang.

For anxious fearful animals with low appetite and stasis in the lower burner, consider Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang.

For advanced Yin deficiency, consider Gui Zhi Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang.

Yunnan Bai Yao is no problem for augmenting hemostasis.

I use Yunnan Pai Yao in all of my prostatic tumor cases and bladder tumor cases that have any evidence of hematuria and find that in most cases it makes a big difference in their comfort level and their ability to void. These guys are prone to secondary infections due to the abnormal mucosa and presence of blood in their urine. It seems that, in addition to the hemostatic properties, the antimicrobial properties of the formula help to decrease incidence of secondary infection as I don't see as many intermittent UTIs/prostatic urethra infections when I use Yunnan Pai Yao. And controlling infection can significantly decrease dysuria. So there are two good reasons for you to add Yunnan Pai Yao to your treatment protocol. Let us know if this makes him more comfortable.
