Question Details
My Own Diarrhea Kitty
by flaviaz - January 16, 2010
Hi there:
Not sure this posted, sorry if it is a repeat
My kitty has diarrhea, found as a stray/feral 2 months ago, emaciated, poor coat, heavily parasitized, and the biggest abd hernia I have ever seen.
I neutered, herniorrhaphy, dewormed, chem, cbc normal, Diarrhea panel wnl. Has put on weight, looks better, but still not right.
Eating z/d and HP 23, stool sometimes formed, never normal. No odor, typical small bowel diarrhea.
Sweeter than sweet, very playful in the AM. Tongue red tip and sides, pulses rapid and very slippery, back coolish, dry coat, surgery clip is taking a while to grow back.
I am diagnosing Spleen Qi Def and Liver Heat.
Treated with Metronidazole, FortiFlora no effect. Have discontinued these and started 3 Seed a few days ago, no effect yet.
So my questions are:
1. Would you concur with my diagnosis?
2. Is 3 seeds appropriate, or would something else be better?
thanks very much

Hi Flavia,

Congratulations on your new family member. I hope you're doing well yourself down there in your personal rainforest in Brazil. I'm sure the forum members here are jealous now they've read that.

Regarding what to do next for your kitty, the slippery pulse and red tongue suggest a need to strongly de-inflame the GI mucosa. SMS is ideal for that when the slippery pulse is felt. SRT works better when it is wiry. So I'd start with SMS.

There may well be a sequence of formulas required here. For some chronic diarrhea kitties, we've ended up with Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (another deep wiry pulse formula), which does a good job of resolving bacterial and viral complaints. Keep that one in mind, too. Meanwhile, start with SMS.

Good luck!

Back when I posted this I had just put him on Baytril for possible campylobacter as recommended by the Medicine specialist. His coat got nice but no change in the diarrhea. I ordered the SMS, and when I got it he had been on Baytril for 5 days. I gave him 2 doses of SMS yesterdy, and his stool was normal this morning. Can this herb work this quickly? Or is it more likely the baytril?
thanks

More on this, he did not eat his SMS one day and had loose stool, the next day he did, and his stool was normal. I do think it was the herb. Amazing. So my next question is, how long do I keep him on it?
thanks

Hi Flavia,

I'm very pleased you saw success so quickly. If he doesn't eat it consistently, you may need to put it in gel caps and pill him with it. Or perhaps you can find an amount low enough that he doesn't mind the taste, and therefore gets it consistently.

I would continue use for a few weeks, then try weaning him off it. He may eventually need a milder version (San Ren Tang or Wei Ling Tang) as the inflammatory process winds down, in order to complete resolution (SMS is best for acute to subacute inflammation where tissues are still engorged). On the other hand, he may only need the SMS alone. Time will tell. But I'd go a couple of weeks and then 'test the waters' once more.

All the best and continued good luck!

More excellent news-on follow up, he is off herbs, almost transitioned completely to regular food and no diarrhea. Thank you so much.

Way to go!

The fruit and nuts came. We're all happily grazing here. Thanks very much!
