Ulcerative Stomatitis In Cavalier
by Cathy L. - January 24, 2010
Hi all-

I have a Cavalier coming in next week dx by her rDVM w/ this condition, and have not seen one before. Apparently she has a several month hx of pharyngeal ulcers, and pred has helped somewhat. This must be an advanced heat state? The literature makes it sound like eosinophilic granuloma in cats, so perhaps allergic?

Thought it'd be good to research a bit before I see her.

Thanks again,

:)Cathy

The top culprits here to rule out would be Stomach Fire and Damp Heat. In some instances, where the mouth looks not nearly as bad as you were expecting, the animals have Blood deficiency. Various formulas to research: Qing Wei San, Yu Nu Jian, Hoxsey, Si Miao San, and Yi Guan Jian.

Once you see the case, it will hopefully be obvious which way things are pointing. Remember to assess the pulse and tongue. Also remember in Damp Heat cases the importance of changing the diet, and the poorer outcomes when owners refuse to do so.

All the best,

Steve
