Question Details
Ear Margin Vasculitis
by Lauren Chattigre - February 13, 2010
Hi there. I've got a new patient coming in for ear margin vasculitis (1yr MN mini Dach/Chihuahua mix)who's had ulcerations and scabs on both pinnae. He's already on pred, trental, and clavamox. Though I haven't had a chance to view tongue and pulse yet, I wanted to get a head start in my thinking on this case. Is there a formula you typically use for these guys? Other supplements/vits (I was thinking basic fish oils, antioxidants and blood purifying herbs)? Thanks again!

Hi Lauren,

These cases are often Blood deficient. So any appropriate Blood deficiency formula may work: Bu Gan Tang, Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, Dang Gui Shao Yao San, etc.

If ulceration is significant and the pulse feels quite forecful and wiry to you, then Qing Ying Tang might be a better choice.

Another thought is Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin....you get the idea...

Oh, and in addition to points for blood deficiency and movement (BL20, SP6, SP10, BL17) and possible heat (LI11) shall I add TH5 since it circles the ear?

Hi Lauren,

You can needle the GB, SI, and TB points cranial to the ear base, as well as TB 17 below it, to have a more immediate effect on the vasculature to the ear cartilage.
