Worsening Renal Azotemia

Hi! I have a 13 year old FS Scottish Fold cat that I've been treating for osteoarthritis of the hocks/declaw sites and progressive renal dz with Rehmannia 8 and Benefit Hips and Knees for over 7 months now. Initially, owner came to me because vocalization at night had progressively worsened and they were also concerned about continued weight loss/progression of the renal dz. When I saw the case 7 months ago, bloodwrk indicated Stage 2/4 CRF (creatinine 1.8 mg/dL and BUN 54 mg/dL with a SG of 1.030 and > 30 g/dl ERD). Started herbal med's, owner reported that vocalization at night dramatically improved, until recently - cat is now back to vocalization throughout the night. Now, cat has continued to lose weight, and renal levels have increased to stage 3/4 (creatinine 3.0 mg/dL, BUN 67 mg/dl, SG 1.019, continued protein loss in urine). Should I consider another herbal combination at this point? And if so, what's your recommendation. I believe the cat is a typical Kidney Yin deficency patient.

Hi there,

You may want to just focus on one of the formulas now, since they compete a little bit in terms of their effects on renal blood flow. We have to test first one way, and then the other, to see what the cat needs. Since you feel the cat is Yin deficient, a Rehmannia formula is the best one to go with. If the cat is chilly or neutral, then I'd still use Rehmannia Eight. If the pulse is forceful and the tongue red, then I agree with your Yin deficiency diagnosis and would look at Rehmannia Six (Liu Wei Di Huang Wan) or even Yi Guan Jian.
