Question Details
Cervical Pain
by cerahk - February 23, 2010
Hi all,
I have been looking at a 2 year old Rottweiller with a 2- 3 week history of cervical pain. It is a waxing and waning paining, worse at night, improves with mild exercise, acupuncture and massage. X-rays, CT, CSF tap and myelogram are all normal. He has reduced exercise. I have just started him on xiao chai hu tang and he is being treated with western medicine Robaxcin and Tramadol. Any suggestions. The surgeon suggests starting on prednisone. Is it OK to have the xiao chai hu tang with all these other meds?? He has a history of damp heat and takes nettles to prevent a prostatitis. Thanks for any help

Hi Cerah,

XCHT is a good place to start. Night is when Qi reaches 'high tide' in the Gall Bladder and Triple Burner channels of the neck. So aggravation at night may point to an 'excess' in those channels, which XCHT can address. Especially if the pulse is deep and wiry, it's the place to start.

If the neck is excruciatingly painful and the animal is hot, consider Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang (Bupleurum and Kudzu), which is suited for severe neck pain involving the TB and GB channels.

If the pulse is very superficial, dilated, soft and 'slippery', with the tongue looking red, then Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang may be a place to start.

In general, though, they all treat somewhat the same thing, so XCHT should effect at least some improvement if we're on the right track. It's safe to use with pred. Interestingly, it's also used for prostate inflammation and cancer in people.
