Question Details
Pneumonia Dog
by Kris - February 26, 2010
I have a 2 yr M rotti. Hx: Street dog, then rescue dog, now in permanent home. Kennel cough gone bad at pound was on Simplicef and Baytril (only Ab's that "worked") for 6+ months. Everytime taken off, became lethargic, stopped eating, yellow/green phlegm hacked up, etc. is also on Pred, lasix and prozac (seperation anxiety) Pulses weak, tongue?,
Started 2 months ago Acupuncture 2X's per week and added Shen Ling Bai Zhu san. Owners saw immediate improvement with decreased cough and color of phlegm.
1.5 months later, off of both AB's, maintaining, but started to become "bloated." no gas/odor, stools normal. Started 3 weeks ago on Dang gui shao yao san for anxiety and damp because still gurgly sounding and this bloating.
Last week started on Wei ling tang and the gurgling has stopped, but still bloated. He is on SoJo food with added cooked meat protein. Maintaining weight, just bloated.
points include Sp40, st36, liv13,LU1,LU5, gv20,hrt7,CV6.
Pulses are moderate with mild change after accupuncture. Tongue has gone from pink to pale pink with white thin coating to purpley and dry.
Does it look like there's a blood +/-Qi stagnation? and I'm not sure what to do for it, the bloating or the anxiety. I'd like to also get him off of pred, prozac and lasix at some point too.
Thank you for your time
Kris

Hi Kris,

A very interesting case.

I would wonder about Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Ginseng and Astragalus). It has the immune stimulating influence that appeared needed to help the dog overcome the pneumonia. I wonder if the delayed recovery was due to the immune suppressive effects of prednisone?

BZQT also moves Qi in the abdomen. A common symptom of Qi stagnation in the abdomen is abdominal distention.

The formula also addresses anxiety complaints, which I assume might be relevant given the use of prozac.

Lastly, the formula has Spleen tonifying properties that seem appropriate, given the responses you've seen to WLT and SLBZS.

In a nutshell, what the formula does is move stagnant Qi from the lower abdomen, allowing it to rise up to the upper burner or chest. Blood is carried upwards with it to the upper burner, to where it can nourish the Heart Blood and relieve anxiety, at the same time as the newly arrived Wei Qi fortifies Lung defenses. The rising effect of the formula also allows better assimilation (Spleen function) in Chinese medicine.

Hope this helps!

Steve
