Lip Fold Pyoderma & Nail Bed Infection

I have just seen a 6 yo mn Bernese mountain dog with severe lipfold pyoderma & nail bed infection. There is moderate pruritus in the face to the point that there is erosive lesions around the nose as well.
The nail beds have a moist exudative supurative discharge. All nails are affected.
The dog likes to seek out cold but "no more than usual". He has been previously diagnosed with hypothyroidism and is currently on supplementation. He has had recurrent pyoderma over the last 2 years.
He is eating "california natural lamb/rice" diet.
The pulse is strong but choppy (im just learning this now) and the tongue is dark in color, especially the tip.semm wrinkled with a whitish coating ( again just learning this through IVAS)
I am suspecting damp heat in this guy, given the pyoderma, panting and heat intolerance but would like some advise on how to proceed with this case.

Hi Daren,

The pulse and tongue indicate a significant stasis component, in addition to the Damp Heat 'nastiness'. The first thing I'd resort to for that kind of presentation is Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin (Angelica and Mastic). As well, I'd try to shift the dog's diet away from processed and away from carbs.

Those two changes should manifest some improvements within two to three weeks. I guess you could use antibiotics in the interim if things are very bad.

XFHMY has a long track record as a formula to treat infections and abscessation.

Got in the Angelica/Mastic granules. This dog weighs 110 lbs. What dose should I use?

Hi Daren,

You should be fine with about 1 1/2 to 2 tsps BID, and could go as low as 1 tsp BID once signs of improvement are evident.
