Question Details
Sudden Onset Cp Deficit
by lsargent - March 20, 2010
I have a 12 y/o f/s 44# lab mix who I have been dry needling for about a year to maintain her strength and cognition. She previously has had bilateral FHO surgery and many years ago was hit by a car and fractured the bejeesus out of her right fore leg which was plated and now has bony osteophytes everywhere. She is droppped in the left carpus from increased weight bearing but will not wear any brace to assist her. Now she is very weak in the rear and as of last weekend will use her left rear leg once she is lifted by the owner in a sling, but will cross over and knuckle over occasionally.
Can there be a progressive weakness or could there be a degenerative nerve issue-I don't think it is an FCE. She is currently on Rehmannia 8 and Vinpuristine & Formula V (Health Concerns) which are formulated for cognitive dysfunction and have really improved that condition. I have started electroacupuncture for the past two weeks and the first session was a little too strong and made her somewhat weaker. When she takes her adequan, she vomits and is nauseous, but is better 24 hours later.
Her pulses are deep and slow but I can't get the owner off of dry food.
Is there a better formulation to assist her as I don't think she is painful only weak. No urine or fecal incontinence and the light is not good enough to give a good tongue color. Lots of history, can you help this old girl?

Thanks,

Lois

Hi Lois,

I would guess a chiropractic or osteopathic evaluation would do this dog the world of good and get rid of most of the CP deficit. Then I'd re-evaluate from a Chinese medicine perspective and see what's left to address. Do you have someone you can refer to, or do these services yourself. If there are no veterinarians doing these services, it's worth trying to track down a human practitioner that is willing to work with you and under your guidance.

Otherwise, if the pulse is toned and deep, and the animal debilitated, I'd wonder about a Wind invasion secondary to Blood, Qi, Yin or Yang deficiency. If this is going on, a simple tonic like Rehmannia 8 will not suffice. You need aromatic Wind dispellers as well, like in Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang.

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the other products, so I can't comment on those.

Hope that helps,

Steve
