Tremoring And Ataxia In A Dog
by mandercrosby - October 24, 2014    View Case Report
Hi all,

Oscar is a 13yo MN standard poodle who is an atypical addisonian and a wobbler. He has battled chronic pancreatitis as well.

On exam, he initially had weak pulses with the right being stronger than the left, a pink tongue tip and lavendar tongue base and general weakness. He prefers warm surfaces to cool ones is a generally weak looking dog. We began treatment to tonify kidney qi, tonify blood, move qi, and clear internal wind. His improvement is rapid and significant after each treatment, but he only is improved for about 7 days post tx. He eats kibble and quinoa and has numerous small cysts over his body

I'd like to start him on herbs, but am not sure what to start him on. Any thoughts? Or other acupuncture ideas?

Thanks so much for your time and advice!

Hi Mandy,

Often my first choice for Addison's, especially where there are also neurological issues, is Minor Bupleurum. Ginseng (or Liu Jun Zi Tang) can be added for additional adrenal benefits and to reduce reliance on glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids.

If your protocols that produce so much improvement include points related to the Gall Bladder and Shao Yang function, that's where I'd start. Otherwise, if there are a handful of points that are working well, please let us know what they are so we can suggest a herbal formula that works the same.

Thank you, Steve!

And to answer your question, Gallbladder points (GB 39 and GB 20 specifically) work so well for this boy, as do SP 6, KI 3, and ST 36. Does that change your recommendation at all?

Again, thanks so much!

Hi there,

That confirms for me that the place to start is XCHT, plus optional additional Ginseng or Liu Jun Zi Tang
