This dog is a 9 yr. old MN English Setter - his history is:
- lifelong PU/PD (USG 1.018)
- pruritic beginning in the fall of his first year, then the next spring and
same pattern from there on. He is asymptomatic in winter.
- typically his feet and sometimes ears become very erythemic, pruritic.
They are dry, no odor or discharge.
- coprophagia, no GI signs
First exam March 2018:
- friendly, active
- P: sl. thin left, middle position and toned
T: pink, sl. mositure
- feet/ ears normal (winter)
- sl. tender on hip palpation
With his thinner pulse, season of itch and lack of damp signs, I started him on Qing ying tang.
At first recheck in April , all was ~ the same. In mid- April (thawing here), he began to have some pruritis. We stopped the QYT, to see if it was helping at all, and not much change. Started CHJLGMLT May 1. He pushed thru the early summer better than normal per his owner, but then his itch ^ mid- August. We started Apoqauel and re- tried the QYT. He was able to maintain a lower dose of Apoquel until the freeze, but not go off.
At rechecks he is typically ~ the same re: tongue and pulse , on 2 tabs BID of each of the formulas (Kan) for his 52 lbs. He is on a commercial raw diet.
So now that we're into winter, I'm wanting to reassess for herbs. During his pruritic seasons (esp. late summer/early fall), his itch is intense. I've not used any straight blood tonifiers, thinking they will not manage this kind of heat.
I started him on a Gemmotherapy protocol for now, an thought we'd add fish oils.
